Diary Day 2

After a breakfast of Mandazi and chai we spent the first half of the morning covering conservation is some detail. Fred covered the history of Solio Ranch and the conservancy and their remarkable story of rhino conservation, unsurpassed in Kenya.

Shivani gave a comprehensive presentation covering everything from environment to environmental degradation and poaching. Some of the images were graphic and very hard hitting – but sadly that is the reality of life in Kenya. Collectively, we stressed the importance of caring for this incredible national heritage, which is hanging in the balance on so many levels. The second half of the morning we took the children horse riding, which for many was an absolute highlight of the two days.

Lunch was followed by the children chatting to some of the Solio staff and learning a little more about the interaction between tourism, community and conervation as the post camp questionnaires were completed. All of the children without exception really enjoyed the two-day experience and they all seemed very sad to leave. They said next time the camp should be for a week!

The questionnaires clearly highlighted that even in such a short time the children’s attitudes towards conservation and tourism had really improved. We are excited to follow these children on their conservation journey and help them become the best conservation ambassadors they can be.

We ended the day by going to Laburra primary school to meet the parents of the children who have been selected to attend the second group of Lion Kids Camp. We were joined by film makers Nina and Khaled, who are shooting a short documentary on the Lion Kids Camps.

For the story they will need to work with one student throughout the day. The school chairman John Muchiri volunteered his son Richard to be that child, and so the three of us went to Richard’s home to plan the filming.
