Working with warriors - Sasaab's new initiatives
29 July 2010
The Westgate Warriors have been under incredible pressure following the recent drought of 2009. Many familiesl ost most of their cattle, sheep and goats (an estimated 85% died in the last quarter of 2009), and as the primary role of the warriors is to herd cattle and livestock, their role within the community was hugely diminished. This led some of the warriors to take up wreckless pastimes that were harmful to the community.
Sasaab's close relationship with the local community has prompted them to start a project that will give the warriors a means of earning income, as well as being occupied. Initially, the warriors will be making traditional 'rungus' for sale in the Sasaab shop. All of the proceeds from the sales will go directly to the warrior concerned.
