SALA’S CAMP: A MAKEOVER IN THE MARA

For over 12 years, our Masai Mara lodge Sala’s Camp has provided our guests with a beautiful base from which to explore the iconic Masai Mara and view its phenomenal wildlife. Sala’s enjoys the privilege of being the first Mara property to witness the annual wildebeest migration and, as such, we are excited to express our continued love and appreciation for its unique location by upgrading this longest-serving member of the TSC portfolio with a major makeover this season.

Sala’s new mess retains the feeling of a traditional tented safari camp but has been enlarged and improved to offer a comfortable, welcoming indoor space. A new dining and sitting room with indoor fireplace make for the perfect cosy refuge on rainy days. A new outdoor campfire pit and seating area, perfect for sharing sundowners and safari stories, is nestled into the river bank and a dining deck now sits above the Sand River with views toward the Mara/Serengeti grasslands. Breakfasts and lunches can be served here under the shade of the African Greenhearts.

Across the Keekerok River to the east of the mess, a bridge provides access to two new tents with private plunge pools, verandas and spectacular views. The first of these is Sala’s new Family Tent which is bookended by two rooms that are joined by a communal lounge leading out onto a large veranda with sun beds, private dining areas and the plunge pool. The second tent is akin to the family one but consists of a single room, making it ideal for couples and honeymooners.

The interior of the rooms are soft in colour, embracing the natural hues of the surrounding yellow grasslands and river sand. The bathrooms are elegantly accented with rich copper and brass fittings reflecting Africa’s warmth and include large copper bathtubs and spacious showers. Floors are made from bamboo and covered with natural reed carpets while striking black and white images hang on the canvas, enriching the space.

In keeping with the unrivalled attention to detail and casual elegance for which TSC properties are known, Sala’s has been outfitted with a spectacular new dining space overlooking the Sand River as well as two new luxury tents with private plunge pools, accessed by a new bridge spanning the Keekorok River.

The second phase of this exciting makeover is presently under way with an additional five new tents due to be completed in time for the upcoming season. These new, airy, sophisticated rooms will also embrace the charm of the traditional Hemingway-style safari while incorporating contemporary touches like glass doors. Two of these new tents will also have plunge pools and another one will be a two-room family tent. Overall, Sala’s has reduced the number of rooms in order to create an even more private and exclusive experience for our guests yet we are proud to honour Sala’s 2016 rates for the new camp. Limited availability still exists over the migration period so don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the Mara’s best new property at amazing value!

We look forward to sharing more of the exciting transformations undergoing at Sala’s Camp in the weeks to come and as we unveil the results when we re-open in June. Mikey Carr-Hartley is hard at work with his team in the Mara as we write and he is sending updates and dispatches about progress daily so be sure to watch this space for news and follow TSC on our various social channels. Please contact us if you have any questions about Sala’s new look or any of our other properties and activities.
