BEHIND THE SELFIE

Strike a pose. Whether you’re a self-confessed selfie addict or not, we bet you won’t be able to resist snapping a shot with our beloved long-legged friends here at Giraffe Manor! But did you know, your snapshot can help save a species?

The perfect giraffe kiss

Out of the 4 giraffe species and 5 sub-species, all but one are threatened, two are endangered and two are critically endangered.

#BehindtheSelfie is our social media campaign which raises awareness for giraffes. Many people do not realise that the world’s tallest mammal is under threat. So we thought, why not harness the Instagram appeal of Giraffe Manor to help this species in decline? Launched two years ago on World Giraffe Day (which coincidently is also National Selfie Day), our #Behindtheselfie campaign has been gathering momentum. Want to get involved? You don’t have to stay at Giraffe Manor to join our journey and STAND TALL for giraffes. Read on to find out how you can help save giraffes.

Making new friends at Giraffe Manor

Our long-legged friends are up there with the best in terms of Instagram likes.

Snapping that perfect selfie isn’t always easy. Although our herd of endangered Rothschild’s giraffes at Giraffe Manor  seem to have it nailed. Undeniably photogenic, their luscious lashes and iconic looks lure even the shyest of us into striking a pose.

But, how much do you really know about the long-lashed beauties sharing your selfie? Did you realise that their numbers are in peril? Over the past 30 years giraffe populations have declined by 30 percent; there is now only ONE giraffe for every FOUR African elephants. If we want future generations to grow up knowing these charismatic African animals then we must act quickly to save their species.

There are only 117,000 giraffes left in the wild.

I’m ready for my close up!

That’s why we’ve taken our ongoing STAND TALL for giraffe movement to new heights. #BehindTheSelfie is part of our campaign to raise awareness about the status of giraffes. Tragically, their perilous existence remains largely unknown. Compared to elephants, rhinos and big cats, they certainly command a lot less airtime. That’s where YOU come in. By sharing a few simple facts in your social media posts, you can have an impact and help tell their story. Make your post more than just a selfie; tell the story behind the lens.

How you can join the journey in three easy steps:

  1. Dig out your best giraffe selfie, a fun snap from your stay with us or something you love from our feed.
  1. Repost it using the hashtags #BehindTheSelfie.
  1. Share a giraffe fact alongside your post to help raise awareness.

Here are a few ideas to get you going…

  • Did you know, Giraffe Manor has been a breeding centre for endangered Rothschild’s giraffes for even longer than it’s been a hotel?
  • You can help by sponsoring a giraffe at Giraffe Manor.
  • There are only 117,000 wild giraffes left in the world.
  • There is only ONE giraffe for every FOUR African elephants.
  • Over 50 giraffes have been returned to the wild from Giraffe Manor.
  • Wild giraffes have declined by 30% in the last 30 years.
  • Did you know, The Safari Collection has put over US$ 4 million into community and conservation programmes in Kenya in the last 5 years?

Over 50 giraffes have returned to the wild from Giraffe Manor and the Giraffe Centre to help grow endangered wild populations.

STANDING TALL for giraffes is part and parcel of what Giraffe Manor is all about. Since the 1970s when the previous owners founded the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), the Manor has supported a breeding programme for endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. This has led to an increase in their wild numbers from roughly 80 to over 1,000 and many giraffes born at the Manor have gone on to repopulate their numbers in the wild. Today, a portion of every guest’s bed night fee goes to AFEW to support their conservation efforts.

We also run a Giraffe Sponsorship Programme in which half of donations go towards the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) – the other half is donated entirely to our Footprint foundation, which supports community and conservation projects across Kenya. GCF is an incredible NGO dedicated to protecting all four giraffe species across 16 African countries. In fact, it’s the only organisation in the world to focus solely on the conservation of wild giraffe.

Wild giraffes across Africa are suffering a silent extinction.
