TURKANA BASIN INSTITUTE

Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) is not a conventional ‘safari’ destination. It is a place to visit the tribes that live there and unlock the secrets of mankind. As far as wildlife is concerned, there are relatively few mammals around, but they do manage to survive. The diversity of flora and fauna and ecological value of the area, as well as the international significance of archaeological and paleoanthropological discoveries, make this a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES

Turkana Basin Institute is primarily a research centre not a holiday destination. The facilities are basic but functional providing a comfortable base whilst exploring the region. At full capacity, the camp can accommodate 60 to 70 people (including support staff), catering from two kitchens and two eating and recreational areas.

GEOGRAPHY & LOGISTICS

  • TBI-Turkwel is situated on the west side of Lake Turkana, near Nakechichok on the Turkwel River, in the Turkana Basin, Kenya
  • TBI has built research centers on both sides of Lake Turkana to reduce the enormous logistical challenge of accessing many of the most important sites in the vast and remote Turkana Basin and to facilitate year-round research.

BACKGROUND

The TBI is a privately funded, non-profit initiative,  founded by Richard Leakey and Stony Brook University. It is a collaborative, international, multi-disciplinary enterprise providing logistical support to scientific researchers. As the most important repository of fossil evidence for human evolution, the TBI is committed to safeguarding the extensive fossil deposits in the region through engagement with the local communities.
