SALA’S CAMP ECO-STAMP OF APPROVAL

Our Masai Mara lodge, Sala’s Camp is delighted to announce that we have received our silver certification under Kenya’s eco-rating Scheme.

This is the very first time that Sala’s has been rated, and silver is the highest level that a first time applicant can achieve so we are delighted to have gained the best possible rating at this time.

At Sala’s, we take our environmental impact very seriously and have introduced a number of schemes to help reduce our footprint and yours as guests:

WATER BOTTLE INITIATIVE

As plastic is not bio-degradable, it just breaks up into tiny pieces over time and remains plastic. It will take a water bottle well over 450 years to break down completely and nearly 90% of water bottles are not recycled and wind up in landfills, where it takes thousands of years for the plastic to decompose.

This is why The Safari Collection gives every guest a re-usable water bottle for them to keep, reducing the amount of plastic waste being generated.  Since introducing the reusable water bottles, we have reduced our plastic waste by 85%.

RECYCLING INITIATIVE

We live in a disposable society and most of what we throw away can be re-used or recycled for another purpose.

All of our tins, glass, card/paper, and plastic waste is cleaned, returned to Nairobi and sent to organisations that are re-using it.
All our organic waste is used to make compost for our vegetable garden.

SAVE A BUCKET INITIATIVE

To help reduce the amount of water we use, there is a bucket provided for you to place under the tap, when you turn the water on. When the water is hot, remove the bucket.

The water you collect will be used for watering plants and cleaning. Just one bucket may not seem like much, but it adds up. The average tap uses two gallons of water per minute. If it takes two minutes to heat the water, that’s four gallons per day, which when calculated at one shower a day, adds up to almost 1500 gallons of water per person per room each year.

CONSERVATION VEHICLE

The Safari Collection has purchased its own conservation vehicle, which will primarily be located in the Masai Mara. The main focus of the vehicle will be to assist with the monitoring of the resident big cats and the rhino population. The vehicle will also be used to help with the running of other community projects whenever it is required.

The vehicle driver is also trained to collect data that is relevant to The Mara Cheetah and Mara Lion projects and The Rhino Team, which will also help them to rapidly build a more comprehensive picture of the wildlife activity in the area.
