LANGO CAMP

Brilliantly remote and almost completely hidden from view on approach, Lango Camp makes up one of the three new eco-camps in Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo. Tucked between forest and an expansive area of open wetlands, the lodge is built entirely on stilts, elevated around four metres off the ground and linked by a series of wooden walkways which enable fantastic views of the surrounding environment. The marshy ‘bai’ directly below the camp holds a magnetic attraction for a host of wildlife, including herds of forest elephant and buffalo, as well as flocks of African grey parrots. A real highlight of staying at Lango is the chance to explore the surrounding network of rivers and streams by boat, kayak and on foot. Drift off to sleep and wake up to the extraordinary sounds of the rainforest in this exciting Congo wilderness.

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES

Desert Rose has just five rooms accommodating a maximum of 12 guests. Cut into the rock of the hillside, they feature stone walls, slate floors, hand-woven rugs and are furnished with unique carved wooden chairs and tables and four-poster beds – all made of local materials, all environmentally sustainable. This wood-carving is a particular feature of Desert Rose: even the soap dishes are made of hand-hewn hardwood. Open-air bathrooms with sunken baths and recessed washbasins complete the Lodge’s sensual, organic feel. The rooms accessed by paths and steps, all have screens and shutters and can be as private or open as the guest wishes. Two of the rooms are doubles, two twins, one a family house sleeping four. There’s a dining room serving home-grown organic meals, a lounge and a small library.

GEOGRAPHY

Odzala-Kokoua National Park sits in the Congo Basin in Central Africa and forms part of the second largest rainforest on the planet. Lango Camp is located in the south central area of the park and is best reached by air. After flying into the capital city of Brazzaville, take a two and a half hour flight to Mboko Airstrip in the park, where you will be met by a member of the Odzala team and driven to camp.

HIGHLIGHTS

Living amidst the canopy in a remote area of untouched equatorial rainforest is a unique experience and offers guests an insight into the arboreal world like no other. The main draw of Lango Camp is the chance to explore the surrounding network of rivers, streams and marshy areas by motorboat, kayak and on foot – or by traditional pirogue if you fancy – offering a unique perspective and immersive experience into this area of astounding biodiversity. Walk and wade in the Lango bai, spot dwarf crocodiles and kingfishers as you cruise the Lekoli River, and look out for aardvarks, serval cats and hyenas on savannah game drives by night and day.
