NGAGA CAMP

Nestled in a glade in the middle of the rainforest, Ngaga Camp is truly gorilla central. It is one of the three new eco-camps in Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo – home to the greatest density of western lowland gorillas in Africa. Ngaga is within the home range of several gorilla groups and is the starting point for gorilla treks, undoubtedly the highlight of any Congo adventure. It is also the base for a team of researchers, fanatical about gorilla conservation and guests are sure to find their passion and enthusiasm inspiring. Delight in discovering the abundant local wildlife, including exotic birds such as the great blue turaco and the black-casqued wattled hornbill, over 416 species of butterfly and rare primates such as the putty-nosed monkey, the grey-cheeked mangabey and the guereza colobus monkey.

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES

Reminiscent of a magical childhood tree house, each of the six private cabins at Ngaga are nestled in amongst the trees and elevated on stilts several metres off the ground, allowing guests to glimpse life right inside the forest canopy. Built using indigenous materials and traditional techniques of the Baka tribe, the beautifully constructed rooms have thatched dome roofs made of palm leaves and private wraparound verandas with deckchairs. All of the en-suite rooms have hot showers, flushing lavatories and comfortable beds from which to enjoy the excitement of drifting off to sleep right inside the jungle.

The main camp area is built on a series of raised decks: a comfortable lounge and dining area; a star gazing deck with large fire pit; and a smaller deck next to the stream below the camp – plenty of comfy spots from which to relax and watch the surrounding wildlife.

Limited internet is available at camp. Consider this a location in which to completely escape from everyday life and relish in being ‘out of touch’!

The camp works hard to keep its environmental footprint to an absolute minimum. Power is provided through solar energy and the camp creates its own water supply through reverse osmosis. Biodegradable products that are not harmful to the environment are provided for guests.

GEOGRAPHY

Odzala-Kokoua National Park sits in the Congo Basin in Central Africa and forms part of the second largest rainforest on the planet. Ngaga Camp is located on the western boundary of Odzala, in the Ndzehi Forest Concession, and is best reached by air. After flying into the capital city of Brazzaville, take a two and a half hour flight to Mboko Airstrip inside the park, where you will be met by a member of the Odzala team. It is then around a three hour car journey to Ngaga – your first exciting game drive in the rainforest!
