EXPLORE SASAAB

AFRICA SAFARI CAMP

If you are seeking a serene oasis in the heart of the Samburu land, then Sasaab is the Africa safari camp for you. A peaceful atmosphere and soothing panoramas permeate the lodge, giving a real sense of having escaped to the wilderness.

Stepping through Sasaab’s main entrance, a beautiful wooden Swahili archway, guests will find themselves in an expansive open plan lounge, bar and dining area set around a central sunken courtyard. Open on all sides to let in a breeze and make the most of the scenery, it’s a delightful space in which to relax, have a drink and enjoy the delicious cuisine on offer. Take a book and recline on one of our swinging day beds or visit our boutique gift shop tucked next to the bar.

Off the dining room you’ll find a wooden deck for enjoying alfresco breakfasts and starlit dinners. Directly in front of the main mess area, a flight of steps leads down to a beautiful infinity pool. Here there’s a pizza oven for lazy poolside lunches – children especially love designing their own pizza toppings before they are baked. Continue down another flight of steps and you’ll reach SpaSaab, a haven of safari zen. Our small gym is also located here and both benefit from the same breath-taking views.

Seven individual tents and one interconnected family suite provide beautiful accommodation in this Africa safari camp. The tents are scattered along the cliff on either side of the central lodge area. Reached via winding gravel pathways, each room enjoys high levels of seclusion and a spectacular outlook onto nature. The private verandas with plunge pools and dreamy views are alluring spaces in which to while away the hours.

Sasaab is very proud of its small kitchen garden which grows all manner of fresh ingredients for the delicious meals our chefs prepare. This is no mean feat given the harsh climate and poor soil our gardeners must contend with! We also have a small brood of hens which lay fresh eggs for your breakfast. Simply ask a member of our team if you would like to take a look.

FIND US ON GOOGLE

Sasaab is on Google Maps – you will find the lodge marked almost in the middle of the country, directly north of Mount Kenya. You can also find our other three properties on here: Sala’s Camp in the Masai Mara, far down on the southern border with Tanzania, Solio Lodge in Laikipia and Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. Most of our guests choose to fly into Samburu and are met by one of our team at Sasaab Airstrip. From here you can enjoy a short game drive back to camp and get a feel for the quite different landscape that characterises this area of Kenya. Alternatively, the drive from Nairobi takes around eight hours, traffic dependent. Most of the journey is straightforward and on good tarmac roads until you reach the park gate.

SASAAB FOOTPRINT

At The Safari Collection we aim to make a positive impact on the communities and wildlife living nearby to each of our properties. Our Samburu lodge supports various community and conservation initiatives in the area, including The Grevy’s Zebra Trust, a School Lunch Programme and our Conservation Scholars initiative. We also help fund dental and eye clinics in nearby Samburu communities to provide life-changing treatments to those in need.

Community Jobs

In keeping with The Safri Collection’s ethos of making a positive impact on the communities and wildlife surrounding each of our proprieties, around 75 % of Sasaab’s team are employed from the local Samburu community. This helps to develop sustainable livelihoods for many families who are facing increasing challenges in their traditional pastoralist way of life. Sasaab enjoys a positive partnership with the local communities which is mutually beneficial.

Conservation Fees

The conservation fees you pay to stay at Sasaab make a positive impact on the surrounding communities living in Westgate Conservancy. Your donation goes towards a variety of causes, including general security and road maintenance, providing clean water and funding new school buildings such as classrooms and libraries. The fees paid by you to game drive in the Samburu National Reserve are vital in enabling this unique wildlife habitat and all the animals living there to be protected for future generations.

In additional to creating employment, our Samburu lodge supports various community and conservation initiatives in the area, including The Grevy’s Zebra Trust, a School Lunch Programme and our Conservation Scholars initiative. We also help fund dental and eye clinics in nearby Samburu communities to provide life-changing treatments to those in need.
