Welcome to Footprint – The Safari Collection’s charitable foundation that unites all of our community, conservation and environmental projects.

Your conservation fees contribute directly towards the running of Westgate Conservancy on which Sasaab is situated. As well as supporting the daily running costs of wildlife management.

Sasaab exists in partnership with Westgate Community Conservancy. Spanning an area of 400 square kilometres, Westgate is home to over 600 Samburu families. Most of these families live a traditional, nomadic way of life and rely on their livestock. Bringing tourism into the area has allowed the community to really see the value of wildlife, helping to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

Conservation Fees

Your donation helps provide clean water, build schools and maintain the roads. In addition, your Samburu National Reserve fee directly helps secure this unique wilderness area and wildlife habitat for future generations.

Community Jobs

Sasaab employs 75% of their team from the local Samburu community, so it is very much a holistic relationship. Your stay allows for the sustainable development of livelihoods to compliment the challenges increasingly faced by traditional pastoralist lifestyles.

OUR FOOTPRINT PROJECTS AT SASAAB

Our close partnership with Westgate Conservancy enables Sasaab to be heavily involved in various community projects. These include annual health clinics, female empowerment workshops and initiatives promoting HIV and FGM awareness among youth. Our Conservation Scholars Programme currently supports 24 students from local villages to attend secondary school. Sasaab also supports different conservation initiatives in the area.

Grevy’s Zebra Conservation

Sasaab has strong links with the Grevy’s Zebra Trust. This local conservation organisation is within 10 minutes drive from the lodge and guests are able to visit and take part in some of their activities. We support them with their initiatives and their Great Grevy Zebra Rally.

Conservation Scholars

We have a scholarship programme in place which currently supports 24 high-achieving students from the local community to attend secondary boarding schools. We try to focus on female students.

Safari Kids

During quiet times our guides visit local schools and give presentations and talks on wildlife conservation and environmentalism. These are the conservationists of the future.

Health Clinics

Each year the Safari Collection runs week-long clinics all over Kenya and recently has run dental clinics and eye clinics for the local people providing free eye surgeries to over 300 community members and dental treatment and basic medical services to over 3000.

SAFE Samburu

Sasaab has recently supported the foundation of a local charity, SAFE Samburu, which recruits youth leaders to stage performances at marketplaces and community gatherings to discourage traditional
practices such as FGM and early marriage and to provide education on HIV awareness.

TEAMtalk

The Safari Collection runs a project called TEAMTalk with the local communities focusing on health, female empowerment, FGM reduction and HIV awareness. It is run in the local schools and uses sport to successfully facilitate workshops raising awareness of these important issues.

The Long Run

Sasaab is a member of The Long Run foundation and is in the process of certification to become a Global Ecosphere Retreat.

Feeding Young Minds

Nutrition is the single most important factor to the progress of childhood education. Sasaab runs a school lunch programme at nine local schools providing healthy and nutritious meals to over 1110 children per day to a total of 250,000 meals per year.

YOUR IMPACT

Just by staying at our properties, each guest helps conserve Kenya’s wild landscapes, look after its wildlife and make a positive impact on peoples’ lives. See how your stay has contributed.
