ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK FROM SOLIO LODGE

The Aberdare National Park is 767 km² and covers the higher areas of the Aberdare Mountain Range of Central Kenya, with altitudes of up to 4,000 meters above sea level. The topography is diverse and very different from that of Solio Ranch, with majestic peaks, rolling moorlands and dramatic waterfalls. The swampy glades, water holes, salt licks and highland forest provide a haven for game such as leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, red duiker, suni, bushbuck and giant forest hog, not forgetting Kenya’s indigenous and endangered black rhino. Rare sightings have been made of the golden cat, and black and white colobus monkeys are abundant.

The slopes of the mountains are covered in heavy forest. Tree ferns gradually give way to deep valleys with streams and rivers cascading over spectacular waterfalls. Above the forest there is a belt of bamboo, where the elusive and critically endangered mountain bongo, a large forest antelope, dwells. The moorlands start at 3,000 metres and are home to various species including eland, spotted and melanistic serval cats. The moorlands are ideal for walking, picnics and fly fishing for trout in the crystal clear rivers.

It is possible to visit the Aberdare National Park in our private helicopter. Please see our Helicopter Excursion booklet for more details.

Plant lovers will enjoy seeing the giant alpine varieties of lobelia, groundsel and heather.

TIP

We suggest leaving after breakfast with a picnic lunch and enjoying a full day out.
