Welcome to Footprint – The Safari Collection’s charitable foundation that unites all of our community, conservation and environmental projects.

By staying at Solio Lodge, your conservation fees support the running of Solio Conservancy and its rhino breeding programme, therefore directly helping to protect this highly vulnerable species.

Solio’s journey as a safe haven for rhino began back in 1970, when the then owner, Courtland Parfet, was asked by the Kenya Wildlife Service to look after five black rhinos which had been left isolated due to poaching. By 1980, Solio was home to 27 rhinos from nine different areas of Kenya, as well as a founder herd of 16 white rhino relocated from South Africa. Solio’s rhino population prospered and over the years, Solio has been responsible for re-introducing over 100 black and 60 white rhinos to protected areas all over Kenya, as well as internationally. With rhino horn fetching up to $60,000 per kilogram on the black market, a team of professional rangers is employed full time to protect each and every rhino from poaching. Solio Game Conservancy is a rhino paradise. Both black and white rhinos are found here in mind-blowing numbers, making it one of the best places in the world to see these prehistoric looking beasts.

Conservation & Breeding

There are over 250 rhinos on Solio Game Conservancy and it is internationally recognized as the most successful private rhinoceros breeding conservancy in Kenya. It is responsible for having trans-located over 100 black and 60 white rhinoceros to other parts of Kenya over the years, including 6 to Uganda. Each guest who stays at the lodge directly contributes to rhino conservation through their conservation fee and it’s possible to meet the conservationists if they are available.
