GOING GREEN

GOING GREEN

We are committed to taking action to achieve long term sustainability. Our goal is to provide guests with a unique and highly personalised safari experience with a focus on attention to detail whilst making a significant contribution to the conservation of Kenya’s wildlife, cultures, and ecosystems. We are accountable for what what we do and try to quantify our improvements, endeavouring to achieve sound sustainable management practices across our entire operation and implement monitoring procedures to record and reduce to a minimum, our use of energy, water and materials and emissions.

We live in a disposable society, most of what we use can be reused or recycled.

SASAAB

All our  glass, tin, paper and plastic is cleaned, and sent to organisations for re-use.

SASAAB

All of our organic waste is used to make compost for our vegetable garden.

SASAAB

WATER BOTTLE INITIATIVE

As plastic is not bio-degradable, it just breaks up into tiny pieces over time and remains plastic. It will take a water bottle well over 450 years to break down completely and nearly 90% of water bottles are not recycled and wind up in landfills where it takes thousands of years for the plastic to decompose – that’s why The Safari Collection gives every client new re-usable metal water bottle for them to keep, reducing the amount of plastic waste being generated.  Since introducing the reusable water bottles, we have reduced our plastic waste by 85%.

SAVE A BUCKET

The average tap uses two gallons of water per minute. If it takes two minutes to heat the water, that’s four gallons per day, which when calculated at 1 shower a day, adds up to almost 1500 gallons of water per person per room each year. To help reduce the amount of water we use, we provide a bucket for you to place under the tap when the water is cold. When the water is hot, remove the bucket. The water you collect is used for watering plants and cleaning. Just one bucket may not seem like much but it adds up.

OUR GREEN CREDENTIALS

Sasaab retained the Gold Eco Rating by EcoTourism Kenya in June 2014 and Solio Lodge received its first Gold Eco Rating in June 2016. This extremely prestigious award makes The Safari Collection one of the very few companies in Kenya to have two properties with the highest possible eco rating. Sala’s Camp received its first Silver Eco Rating in 2015 and will be striving to achieve a gold rating there in 2017. There are two main areas which are considered when being awarded this certification, Environmental and Socio-economic. Below are some of the initiatives that we have introduced at our properties making them very worth recipients of their awards (for more visit www.ecotourismkenya.org).

ENVIRONMENTAL

  • The insecticide in our rooms is a natural pyrethrum based non-aerosol.
  • Every cleaning product that is used is non-toxic and bio-degradeable.
  • Reduce-Reuse-Recycle. Our waste policy goes hand in hand with buying local produce, reducing packaging and transport.
  • Each property has its own kitchen garden to provide freshly picked salads and vegtables every day.
  • We comply with Kenya’s highest standards for environmental waste management and our systems are regularly tested for compliance.

POWER AND WATER

  • We use solar energy exclusively where possible to provide electricity and water is heated using solar powered boilers.

  • Our drinking water is produced on site using revers osmosis machines.

  • All our power and water use is monitored and timer switches have been put in place to reduce the power consumption.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC

  • At Sasaab 75% of staff are employed from the local community and we endeavour to employ as many local people at each of our other properties. Many of our staff have worked with us for generations and many members of the family are employed in different roles.
  • We use local suppliers at all of our properties as much as possible.
  • We work with the local communities to help them preserve their cultural traditions and share them with guests.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY

We invite our customers, suppliers and contractors to participate in our efforts to protect the environment and local communities, working with others in the tourism industry, in public agencies and the community to achieve wider sustainable management goals.
