KIBUMBA TENTED CAMP
Nestled within the lush volcanic forests of Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Kibumba Tented Camp is a nature-lover’s paradise. Surrounded by one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the planet, the camp is within the range of two habituated mountain gorilla families which can be trekked right from the camp. Encountering these critically endangered creatures who share 98 percent of our DNA can be a deeply moving and intense experience. Opened in October 2017, Kibumba is the newest camp inside the park and offers exceptional value for money and access to an unforgettable and extraordinary experience.
ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES
18 spacious safari-style tents provide attractive and comfortable accommodation. En-suite bathrooms with hot showers, fresh white linen and cosy hot water bottles on chilly evenings means that you can relax and rest deeply after trekking through the forest. Perched on top of a hill, the wooden framed communal lounge area is open plan and offers fantastic views over the surrounding mountain peaks and Virunga valleys. Fresh and nutritious meals on the communal dining deck will keep you fuelled and ready to take advantage of the many activities which include forest nature walks to spot the Golden monkey and some of the rare high-altitude bird species, as well as hiking up Mount Nyiragongo to spend a night on the rim of the largest lava lake in the world.
GEOGRAPHY
Kibumba Tented Camp is situated approximately one hour’s drive from the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is the closest camp to the Rwandan-Congo border crossing. The best way to reach Goma is by road from Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, which is an easy three-hour drive on good roads. Alternatively, you can fly into Goma. Located near to Nyiragongo trails and within walking distance of the gorilla treks, the camp is in the ideal location for quick access to both of these unmissable activities.
