TURKANA SAFARI

The Turkana Safari journey we’ve been on is a spectacular, if sobering, one in which we learn lessons not just about what has occurred over millions of years, but how the planet is changing as we sleep. we are granted access to a room where some of the world’s most precious discoveries of our ancestors are kept. Leakey carefully lays skulls out on a table, and we see the features that have changed over six million years of evolution, from a small-brained, large-jawed creature to the bigger-brained Homo sapiens of today.

Lisa Grainger, Travel writer and editor, UK

Leakey offers a journey back through time on this Turkana Safari — but even reaching the institute to begin that journey is an adventure. The basin is far from Kenya’s usual tourist routes, and driving from Nairobi would take days, so we fly up in a chartered helicopter over some of the most spectacular scenery on earth.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Turkana region is a UNESCO heritage site. It offers up some of the richest evidence of man’s earliest roots. This is evident in the fossil beds that are well-preserved within the Rift walls. To reach Turkana you will journey by helicopter over the vast and varied topography and beautiful expanse of the dusty Northern Kenya. Our helicopter day trips from here take you to see some of the most breathtaking sights. Fly over the desert, through the barren rocky landscape where you will suddenly set eyes on the volcanic island within the ‘Jade Sea’. On your return, you will fly over the pink sea of flamingos before touching back down in Turkana.

WHEN TO GO

As the world’s largest permanent desert lake and the world’s largest alkaline lake, Lake Turkana supports a rich lacustrine wildlife and a very dry, hot climate. The warmest, driest months are October to January while July and August are the coolest. During this period the area is subject to strong southerly and southeasterly winds. The total annual rainfall is less than 200 mm and is unpredictable though most likely between March and May.
