INTO THE HEART OF AFRICA

Travel deep into the heart of the Congo for the ultimate wilderness adventure in Odzala-Kokoua National Park – a wild and remote location that few people have ever had the chance to visit. Experience what it is like to trek through one of the great ‘lungs’ of our planet in the second largest rainforest left on earth. Alongside expert wildlife trackers, feel the thrill of searching for the western lowland gorillas in their natural habitat, and the wondrous and deeply moving experience of observing some of our closest living relatives on earth. Explore networks of rivers and streams by kayak or boat and view the abundant wildlife on guided forest walks. Combined with the ultimate Kenyan safari experience in the world famous Masai Mara, this trip really does offer an extraordinary adventure of a lifetime. For those with a sense of adventure, this ‘off the beaten track’ safari is well worth the effort.

Tourism is a relatively new, yet a growing sector in the Republic of Congo and is a vital tool in helping conserve these incredible wildlife destinations. Having visited the park, I am very proud to become one of the pioneers in promoting it as an exciting destination for the more daring traveller seeking a path less taken. This trip was really a dream come true. To be so immersed in nature – just me and the forest is something I will never forget, I feel very lucky.

HIGHLIGHTS

This ‘off the beaten track’ itinerary offers an immersive rainforest experience that is sure to satisfy your sense of adventure. Undoubtedly, tracking the western lowland gorilla is one of the main highlights – spending time observing the behaviour and interactions of the group, from the playful juveniles to the impressive and intimidating male silverbacks. Following this, simply experiencing the astonishing biodiversity of flora and fauna in a pristine rainforest ecosystem is also very special. Drifting down the river by boat, or exploring the wildlife in the network of streams and swamps by kayak and on foot, this journey will enlighten and astonish you. Staying at the legendary Giraffe Manor and experiencing a breakfast like no other, followed by exceptional sightings on the vast plains of the Masai Mara, will keep your appetite for excitement satisfied until the final moments of this trip.

WHEN TO GO

The temperature in the Republic of Congo is fairly even throughout the year (averaging around 30°c)

Dec-Feb (short dry season)

This is driest time of the year and the best time to visit Odzala for Gorilla trekking.

March – April (short rainy season)

The wettest season and probably best avoided!

May – Sep (long dry season)

This is another option for Gorilla trekking.

Sep – Nov (rainy season)

Tropical rainstorms bring an impressive abundance of wild flowers and birds during these months, providing dramatic lighting and many photo opportunities.
