In our post-pandemic world, travel has become a more precious gift than we could ever have imagined.  So too has the need to cherish time spent with loved ones. 2020 saw grandparents looking longingly through screens at their grandchildren and parents battle travel restrictions to spend time with sons and daughters. Now, more than ever, we’re experiencing a deeper desire to connect with our loved ones in meaningful ways. What better way to celebrate being together than through the shared experience of a memorable vacation? And the ultimate type of multi-generational travel? Family safari holidays.

Hang on, we hear you ask, how can one trip simultaneously manage the demands and desires of a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old? And what about avoiding the inevitable family feuds that a shared vacation is bound to bring about?! Choosing the right destination and type of vacation is the key to ensuring a seamless experience for everyone. Family safari holidays can meet the needs of your whole crew, from tweens to great gramps and everything in between. With ageless appeal and activities to suit all interests, an adventure into the African wilderness really can tick every family member’s box.

FAMILY SAFARI HOLIDAY

A family safari holiday is, by its very nature, naturally socially distanced.

Safety is of paramount concern to many travellers today, especially more elderly adventurers or those with weakened immune systems. Holidaying within the safety of a family bubble makes a perfect travel pod for the current times. What’s more, a safari is by its very nature, socially distanced. Safari-goers stay in small, intimate properties in the middle of the wilderness surrounded by miles of open space. Experiences are centered around nature and the great outdoors; space and fresh air are a given. Private dining set-ups, bush picnics, exclusive game drive vehicles and minimal interaction with other people make family safari holidays the ideal choice for anyone seeking a socially distanced vacation.

The ageless appeal of the African bush is an awe-inspiring and unforgettable experience for all generations. At The Safari Collection, our professional guides are experts at ensuring everyone’s needs are met. From following the drama of a leopard on the hunt to finding the perfect position for passionate photographers, or from stopping to inspect animal tracks in the mud to spotting a stunning array of birdlife, the wildlife experience can be enriching and wonderful for everyone.

Come together, slow down and get out into the wild.

A relaxed vibe is a key ingredient of successful family safaris. That’s why all four of The Safari Collection’s properties offer exceptionally high levels of personalised service and flexibility. Days are yours to make and itineraries are fluid. Some family members might like to head out at first light on an exciting game drive, whilst others can lie in and enjoy a leisurely lodge breakfast. Each of our lodges and camps have specially designed family units, comprised of two en-suite bedrooms connected via spacious shared lounge areas which provide perfect private spaces in which to relax and socialise together. Wi-fi in all rooms will satisfy the social media needs of your teens, whilst a plethora of outdoor nature-based fun awaits children who love exploring. Younger children can enjoy a picnic supper out in the bush whilst grown-ups savour a sundowner drink. Special dietary requirements and earlier children’s meals are easy to arrange and we also offer a ‘baby-listening’ service.

The perfect vantage point to experience the landscape

At each of our properties, our guides love taking children under their wing to teach them about the wild.

At Sasaab, younger guests might enjoy competing in a mini ‘Samburu Olympics’ and learning some fun Samburu warrior bush survival techniques. Quad bikes, camel rides and our heavenly infinity pool and private plunge pools overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River provide endless outdoor entertainment in this stunning area of northern Kenya. At Sala’s Camp in the Masai Mara, children might like to hunt for animal tracks in the sandy riverbed or play volleyball with the whole family. Beautiful hot air balloon rides over the African plains are a special activity that some family members might choose to experience. Horse riding and mountain biking are great for burning off steam in the wild at Solio Lodge. Art supplies, outdoor games and roasting marshmallows around an evening campfire are just some of the fun children’s activities at all of our properties. For a real off the grid family adventure, book one of our epic helicopter excursions from Sasaab or Solio Lodge to explore Kenya’s most remote and untouched landscapes, full of thrilling surprises and magical memories waiting to be made.
