HAPPY BOX, HAPPY KIDS!

In March we were delighted to welcome the fantastic Jumana Al Darwish and her Happy Box team from Dubai and Kuwait to Solio Lodge for a presentation at the nearby Honi Primary School which we have been rebuilding for the last 11 months thanks to a generous donation from Mr Charles Wickham. The team brought out 300 happy boxes for each of the children at the school containing lots of fun educational toys and games.

The teachers and pupils held a lovely ceremony attended by many of the parents and the school board as well as some of the staff from Solio Lodge. We were entertained by the students reading poems, performing short theatre pieces and singing. There were also speeches from the teachers and the school board.

After visiting Solio Lodge, the Happy Box team moved down to Nairobi to spend a night at Giraffe Manor and the following day visited the Briton School in Mukuru wa Njenga shanty close to Jomo Kenyatta Airport to give out more Happy Boxes to the students. The school was started several years ago by headmaster Geoffrey and his wife Wilkester. Their aim was to provide an education for students from the slum who did not have school places and it has been achieving quite incredible academic results in premises that are so small, you cannot believe it would have space for 50 students (let alone the 250 who actually do attend)!

Thanks to Jumana and the Happy Box team and the staff at Solio Lodge and Giraffe Manor for their hospitality. We look forward to more projects in the coming years!
