AJABU HOUSE

Overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Naivasha, northwest of Nairobi, Ajabu house is a stunning family home and tranquil retreat. Its name means ‘a miracle’ in Kiswahili, and it certainly does feel like a magical place, nestled under majestic giant fig trees on the water’s edge. The house is located on Loldia Farm on the north side of the lake and has been a much-loved family home to the Hopcraft family for over a hundred years. Beautiful scenery, abundant bird life and a host of fabulous day trip destinations within easy reach make it a perfect escape for all the family.

ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES

The house can accommodate up to 18 guests and has a cosy, family home feel to it, with an open log fire, a deep veranda overlooking the lake and a lush garden full of trees and flowers. In the main house, the master bedroom has fabulous views across the lake to the conical, volcanic peak of Mount Longonot and the Aberdare Mountain Range. Adjoining this there is an enchanting twin ‘bird room’ which was hand-painted with East African birds for the Hopcraft children over 60 years ago. Siriane Guest Cottage on the lawn adjacent to the house has two en-suite doubles, again with fabulous views over the lake, and a second Muse Guest House at the back of the property has a family suite and two further rooms. The house has a clay tennis court for guest use and is ideally located for a host of water-sports.

GEOGRAPHY & LOGISTICS

Ajabu House is conveniently located within an easy two hour drive from Nairobi, with great scenic views over the Rift Valley along the way. For an even quicker transfer, there are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport into Loldia airstrip, taking only 25 minutes.

HIGHLIGHTS

A huge wooden deck shaded by giant figs and overlooking the lake provides a spectacular setting for breakfast, lunch and evening sundowners. The bird-life around the lake is abundant – pelicans, kingfishers and fish eagles are all easily spotted, amongst many other species. Naivasha is also a great place to see pods of hippos. For longer stays, there are numerous attractions in the area – take a picnic and explore Lake Nakuru National Park for a day; cycle around Hells Gate National Park on the other side of the lake; witness the diversity of flora and fauna on a hike though Mount Eburru Forest Reserve and spot black and white colobus monkeys swinging from the branches; traverse the crater rim of Mount Longonot; photograph flamingos on Lake Elementaita and on Soysambu conservancy.
