NEW SPACES TO LEARN

Elimu ndio mwanga uongozayo kila shani.
Knowledge is the light that leads to everything wonderful.
~ Swahil proverb

At the heart of The Safari Collection Footprint foundation’s mission is an investment in education. The foundation recognises that education not only has the power to positively transform lives, but also serves as a crucial factor in securing the conservation of our planet for generations to come.

Pupils enjoying their new classroom and desks

One of our latest achievements is a fabulous new classroom at Laburra Primary School in Nyeri, not far from Solio Lodge. The building was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Solio Lodge guests Tony and Ana. The Rotary Foundation, together with another Solio guest (also called Tony), donated the desks to go inside. Teamwork has the power to accomplish a great deal!

‘Through the influence of education on young minds, the new classroom will ultimately have a positive impact on our environment for future generations.’
~ John Githinji Nduru, Head Teacher

Cutting a ribbon on the classroom door

On March 7th our Footprint team joined a group from Solio Lodge for the official classroom opening ceremony held at the school. Parents and pupils celebrated together and were full of appreciation for their smart new learning space. With over 300 pupils aged five to twelve, the new facilities are making a huge difference to lessons.

Learning in action at Laburra Primary School

The construction of the classroom was incredibly timely, as it was ready for the start of the school year in January, which saw the commencement of a whole new grade. Introduced this year by the Kenyan education system, it’s called ‘Junior Secondary School’ or JSS, and provides post-primary education but at a level lower than School Certificate level.

‘The Safari Collection Footprint foundation’s timely and visionary construction of a library, a dining hall, a new classroom and water harvesting system at Laburra Primary School has brought cheer to the pupils, teachers and parents and set a new dawn for better grades, increased enrollment and a much-needed facelift for the school.’
~ Peter, local building contractor

What’s next for Laburra?
Plans to start breaking ground on a purpose-built teacher’s administration block and staffroom are already underway. This will free up the existing staffroom space to become an extra classroom. What’s more, we all know that happy teachers make better teachers and happier students!

New kitchen building previously donated to Laburra Primary School

This year’s new classroom is just one achievement of many that our Footprint foundation has been able to help Laburra Primary School with. Previous donations have included the construction of a library, a new kitchen and dining hall, guttering, water tanks and more classrooms. We have assisted with providing desks and teacher training, and the school has also been part of our Feeding Young Minds Programme, which provides nutritious free school lunches to over 1,100 pupils every year.
