ACCESS A SECRET WORLD

Last month we transported a team from our central Nairobi office to Sasaab to experience an epic private helicopter adventure exploring Kenya’s great north. We know that to design the perfect safaris, our experts need to know exactly what they’re offering from firsthand memories. Whether it’s otherworldly photo opportunities, ancient rock art, culture, wildlife or insane geological formations their guests are seeking, we showed them what treasures lie just beyond the doorstep of Sasaab. They were blown away by what they discovered in a country they thought they knew so well! Here’s what they had to say…

Sasaab’s backyard is ripe for exploration

The Safari Collection team members with Tropic Air pilot

The experience is really interactive.

GIDEON MATHENGE

Three-word summary: Incredibly intimate experience.

What was your favourite moment from the trip? Flying over Lantodo and Naisusu Mountains which look tiny from a distance, but they are huge!

Why would you recommend the heli for guests on safari? As well as seeing so much in just a couple of hours, the experience is really interactive. The pilots know the landscape in depth, so bring out all your questions! You also land and explore the landscapes yourself, making the experience so much more than just a ride.

Landing on top of Mount Ololokwe to explore by foot

Kenya is a beautiful from an eagle’s view.

ANTHONY GATHII

Three-word summary: Mind blowing experience.

Did anything surprise you? Yes, the thrill and seeing so many different landscapes within such a short period. The unfolding of different Laikipia landscapes was quite spectacular and you didn’t know what was going to appear next!

Favourite moment from the day? Landing on top of the sacred Samburu Mountain of Ololokwe to watch the sun set. It’s incredible how the helicopter can literally land anywhere.

Admiring the view from Ololokwe

See the world in a whole new perspective.

JANET MWANGI

Three-word summary: Amazing, thrilling, unforgettable.

Did the experience live up to your expectations? It exceeded my expectations, it was mind-blowing. The way the heli could just take turns and circle around for us to get a closer look at an animal we’d spotted was a great surprise.

Why would you recommend the heli for guests on safari? Because it’s not just a helicopter ride, it’s so much more: it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that transports you to places you never thought existed and causes you to see the world in a whole new perspective.

Flying with flamingos

I got to ride shotgun which was exhilarating.

DAVID MWABILI

Three-word summary: Bucket. List. Experience.

What was your best moment from the helicopter safari? The ascent from the Samburu floor up the steep rocky cliff face of Mount Ololokwe. It was pulse raising.

What was the most useful item you took with you on the heli? A zip-up fleece came in handy because you experience such a wide range of altitudes and landscapes in such a short space of time.

Landing in the dune fields

Don’t hesitate to book!

Our team in the heli ready to go!

LAWRENCE ANAMWENE

Three-word summary: A dramatic experience.

Top tips for guests considering a helicopter trip? Transfer by heli is also an option, like I did. I flew from Solio Lodge to Sasaab which immersed me in such a diversity of landscapes even in a short, one-hour trip.

What was your highlight? Flying through the steep rocky Mukutan Gorge with spectacular views of flora and fauna. It was a labyrinth of lush untouched valleys. Transferring by road or aeroplane you would never know this even existed.
