VIRUNGA GORILLA EXPLORATION

This trip is an amazing chance to visit a country that few tourists see – the Congo. You will start your adventure in Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border of Uganda and Rwanda. Virunga is Africa’s oldest national park and is also the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area. The park’s 7800 km² includes forests, savannahs, lava plains, swamps, erosion valleys, active volcanoes and the glaciated peaks of the Rwenzori mountains. This relatively undiscovered gem, is home to about a quarter of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking through this vast and beautiful forest to meet the gorillas or climb one of the many volcanoes will suit all of those with an unquenchable thirst for the next chapter in their African adventure. After this epic trip into the Congo, you will return to Nairobi and unwind at the legendary Giraffe Manor. You will then fly to the highlands of northern Kenya, see indigenous animals such as rhinoceros, relax in luxury tented camps and if you wish, take part in all manner of outdoor activities from trekking to horse riding, even fly-camping deep in the bush.

It is hard to say which is the more memorable experience – to stand on a volcano’s peak at night and watch a lava lake boiling away in a crater far below like a fiery vision of Hades; or to stand yards from a mountain gorilla in lush forest and sense the almost human intelligence behind its eyes, an unmistakable feeling of distant kinship, as you size each other up.

HIGHLIGHTS

Virunga National Park covers an area 790,000 ha, that include an outstanding diversity of habitats. From lava plains to the savannahs, dense lowland and higher bamboo forests, swamps and steppes, to the Rwenzori snowfields at an altitude of over 5,000 m, and the Virunga volcanoes. The park is a refuge for hippopotamuses, mountain and lowland gorillas, and the highlands have notable examples of the high altitude flora and giant herbs unique to the mountains of Africa.

WHEN TO GO

Virunga National Park’s  vast range results in marked climatic variations. Rain in this region is varied and includes both the highest and lowest rainfall levels in the country,  but is generally more heavily from March to May and mid-September to mid-December, with drier spells following each.
